FAQ

Here are some frequently asked Intermodal questions:

Is Intermodal reliable?
arrow

Yes, it’s known for its consistency and dependability. Shippers continue to convert their retail and industrial product shipments to intermodal because of its strong reputation for service performance and cost savings compared to over-the-road (“OTR”) truck.

What is blocking and bracing?
arrow

Implementing blocking and bracing is crucial to ensure the safety of intermodal containers during transportation just as it is with OTR truck. Blocking techniques aim to secure the load by preventing any sideways or front-to-back movement within the container or trailer, while bracing techniques are used to prevent any vertical shifting of the load. The ride quality with Intermodal is equal to or superior to OTR transportation.

Are there restricted commodities?
arrow

Restricted commodities exist, but it’s worth noting that their packaging can make them exempt from restrictions. Be sure to communicate with the provider to ensure the safe transportation of your cargo when reviewing shipping restricted commodities.

What is the maximum weight that can be transported?
arrow

It is recommended that intermodal containers carry a maximum of 42,500 pounds of freight.

What is an IMC?
arrow

An IMC, which stands for intermodal marketing company, is a logistics service provider or broker that procures rail Intermodal transportation services.  An IMC provides value-added services and issues a single freight bill to the shipper for an Intermodal shipment.  In today’s market, 3PLs are diversified and offer the Intermodal service along with other competencies providing a transportation management platform offering value added services.
